Interactive Wearables: Extending the Body and Redefining Social Interaction

In this video, we explore the concept of variables as extensions of one’s body. By incorporating interactive technologies into wearable garments, variables can become an extension of our physical selves, transforming our perception of the world, communication with others, and even our bodily awareness.

One such project is Pal, a soft robotic emotive garment equipped with a facial tracking camera. The garment responds to the emotions of people around it, mirroring their facial expressions. This raises the question of whether garments can possess intelligence to understand our emotions and adapt their behavior accordingly, potentially altering our social interactions.

Another project, Bori Escape, is an interactive 3D-printed top that synchronizes human bodily movement to lighting patterns. Inspired by the tension lines of human skin, the garment uses a fragile material to celebrate the dynamic nature of the human body. This project highlights the potential for wearables to enhance our understanding of human movement and emotion, opening up new possibilities for self-expression and communication.
