How to Read Bowling Patterns Like a Pro (Even When You Don't Know Them)

Hey everyone, it’s Nick Parr with some tips on how to read bowling patterns without prior knowledge. Typically, I start by bowling at arrows 5, 10, and 15 to gauge the pattern’s behavior. This gives me insights into where I need to aim both upfront and down the lane.

While observing the ball’s movement down the lane, I pay attention to its exit point and how it reacts. Additionally, I watch the pin action closely, noting the type of spares I leave. For instance, a 10-pin spare can reveal whether the six pin wrapped around it (indicating a “wrap 10”) or if it remained stationary (“flat 10”). A 4-pin spare often signifies good ball reaction and proximity to the ideal bowling angles.

Using my versatile Venom Shock ball, I explore different lanes to discover what the pattern demands. I start by targeting the first, second, and third arrows. By analyzing how my ball behaves on each arrow, I gain a sense of the pattern’s length and friction points. This helps me determine which arrows offer the most consistent ball movement.

Ultimately, reading bowling patterns effectively entails trial and error. By experimenting with different arrows and observing the ball’s response and pin action, you can identify the optimal angles and positioning for success. Always be aware of your fellow bowlers’ actions on adjacent lanes, as their performances can provide valuable cues to the pattern’s characteristics.
