Master the Rowing Machine: Avoid the Top 3 Mistakes

Welcome to another rowing video! Today, we’re tackling the top three mistakes people make when using this challenging yet rewarding machine. By addressing these issues, you can optimize your rowing technique and maximize your fitness gains.

First on our list is relying too heavily on foot straps. While they’re there to keep your feet in place, they shouldn’t be the primary force pulling you through the stroke. This can lead to hip pain and disengages your core from the movement. To fix this, try the feet-out rowing drill. Unstrap your feet, place them on top of the straps, and row. Focus on maintaining proper form, driving with your legs, swinging back with your core, and finishing with your arms.

Next, let’s talk about the blended stroke, where the sequence of leg drive, core swing, and arm pull becomes a jumbled mess. This reduces efficiency, increases fatigue, and can even cause injuries. To reinforce the proper stroke sequence, practice the pink drill. Start at the finish position, with the handle in your chest and your legs flat. Break down the stroke into individual components: arms only, arms and core, and finally, legs, core, and arms. This will help you internalize the correct sequence.

Finally, we come to the dreaded knee bounce—a major obstacle to fitness progress. Knee bounce occurs when you fail to hold the stroke down and finish with your legs flat and handle to your chest. Instead, you bounce back up with your knees before completing the stroke. This disrupts the power transfer and wastes energy. To address this, practice pause strokes. Hold your stroke at the finish for two seconds, forcing yourself to maintain leg extension and preventing knee bounce.

To enhance your practice, consider adding pause strokes at different points in the stroke cycle. Pause at arms and core or legs and core to further refine your technique and muscle memory. Remember, rowing is a challenging exercise, but by working smarter and harder, you can maximize your results.
