Welcome to the enchanting Harry House, nestled in the heart of Melbourne’s vibrant north, where the lush greenery of Merri Creek interweaves with the culinary delights of Sydney Road. Join us as we explore this unique and playful abode designed by award-winning architects Archer + Buchanan, where the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living seamlessly blur.
Originally home to a quaint pre-war weatherboard cottage, Harry House has been thoughtfully reimagined to embrace its sprawling garden, transforming it into the centerpiece of the home. The architects skillfully preserved the warmth of the original cottage, while creating a dynamic new extension that frames the lush fig trees and overgrown foliage beyond.
As you step inside, the sight line from the front door draws you through the extension, connecting you instantly with the verdant garden. The choice of materials reflects the architects’ desire for honesty and durability, with robust carpentry, weathered concrete, and fireproof INAX board creating a textural symphony.
Japanese design elements are subtly woven throughout the home, paying homage to the homeowner’s heritage. A mizuya tansu, an antique Japanese cabinet, finds a cherished place within the space, adding a touch of cultural richness. The design also masterfully addresses the challenge of a long, narrow site by incorporating a courtyard that floods the rumpus room and main living area with natural light, while enveloping the building in a verdant embrace.
Despite its relatively compact footprint, the home maximizes space through innovative solutions like netted areas suspended in voids, replacing bulky rumpus rooms with versatile and airy spaces. Expansive glass windows connect the interior to the garden and sky, creating a sense of boundless space. The bathrooms adopt the traditional Japanese approach, with separate areas for toilet, basin, and bathing, offering a serene and rejuvenating experience.
The heart of the home, the kitchen, is a culinary sanctuary with a step-down design that allows for a comfortable workspace for the chef while creating an inviting gathering space for family and friends. The house has proven to be an idyllic sanctuary for a young family, providing abundant natural light, a constant connection to the garden, and a perfect blend of playfulness and functionality.
