The Ultimate Guide to the New EV Tax Credit: 7 Things You NEED to Know

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the complexities of the new federal tax credit for electric vehicles (EVs) and explore seven crucial factors you need to know. Understanding these changes is essential for determining your eligibility and navigating the EV market.

Firstly, the law aims to promote the production and sale of affordable EVs and strengthen the regional EV supply chain. However, it excludes many EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) from the tax credit eligibility. Price limits for new vehicles will take effect, so it’s crucial to check the US Department of Energy’s list to see if your desired EV qualifies.

Effective since August, all qualifying vehicles must be assembled in North America, regardless of the model year. Additionally, the size of the battery no longer determines the credit amount; instead, it focuses on the battery’s origin and components. To receive the full credit, certain percentages of the battery must meet specific criteria related to recycling, extraction, or processing in the US, or manufacturing or assembly in the US.

While only a handful of new EVs qualify for the credit until the end of this year, it’s worth exploring your options immediately. Used EVs are also included, with a price limit of $25,000 and criteria related to age, purchase method, and tax filing status.

EVs purchased before August but delivered after the new year require a written binding sales contract dated before August 16th to qualify for the tax credit. For leased EVs, the tax credit is directed to the manufacturer offering the lease, not the individual.

Finally, the decisive factor in your eligibility is your income. The buyer income limits based on your tax filing status are as follows: single (under \(150,000), head of household (under \)225,000), and joint return (under $300,000).

Remember, the Department of Treasury is yet to finalize its guidelines, so the list of eligible vehicles may change in 2023. Stay informed by checking our website for updates and more details on these crucial factors.
