Unveiling the Denim Wrap Skirt from Upcycle Games
In this video, we’re excited to showcase the winning creation from our Upcycle Games: a stylish denim wrap skirt made from two pairs of old jeans. Join Angelina, the creative mind behind BlueprintDIY, as she guides you through the upcycling process, demonstrating how to transform discarded denim into a one-of-a-kind wardrobe staple.
Step 1: Gathering Materials
We begin with two pairs of jeans, salvaged from previous projects. Angelina emphasizes the importance of preserving denim, as it’s a versatile fabric that deserves a second life.
Step 2: Cutting and Preparing the Fabric
Using the flat fell seam as a guide, Angelina cuts along the inner leg seams of both jeans. The aim is to create two front panels, each with a flat fell seam running down the center.
For the back panel, she cuts two wider pieces from the back legs of the jeans. These pieces are sewn together along the grain of the denim, with an optional curve at the bottom for a better fit.
Step 3: Assembling the Skirt
Angelina aligns the front and back panels, positioning the flat fell seams over her knees. She marks the side seams and adjusts them to accommodate her curves. The side seams are then sewn together, creating the basic shape of the skirt.
Step 4: Refining the Fit
Examining the fit, Angelina realizes that the skirt needs some adjustments. She takes in the sides, curves the seams near the knees, and adds darts to enhance the fit in the back.
Step 5: Creating the Closure
To create the closure, Angelina cuts a four-inch strip of denim and folds it in half. She cuts it at an angle and sews it around three sides, leaving one side open. She turns it inside out and irons it flat.
Step 6: Adding Details
Angelina serges the edges of the skirt, folds them under, and top-stitches them for a professional finish. She also adds buttonholes to the closure piece.
Step 7: Installing the Buttons
After some trial and error with buttons from Hobby Lobby, Angelina discovers that vintage YSL buttons are the perfect choice. She hand-sews them onto the closure piece.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
To complete the skirt, Angelina marks the buttonholes on the skirt and hammers in the buttons. She wears the finished skirt, demonstrating its stylish and flattering fit.
