Augmented Reality Indoor Navigation: A Step-by-Step Guide

Navigating Indoor Spaces with Augmented Reality

Indoor navigation can be challenging due to the absence of GPS signals. This video demonstrates a solution that combines augmented reality (AR) and a custom navigation algorithm to guide users indoors.

Creating the Map and Waypoints

To create a map, scan all potential user entry and common areas using an AR device. Walk to the destination, dropping waypoints (breadcrumbs) along the path. Mark the destination and continue scanning from various start points to ensure paths from all potential entry points are mapped. Save the map and waypoint data to the cloud. Navigation

Launch the app in a previously scanned area. The device will automatically localize and activate the A-star pathfinding algorithm. The algorithm calculates the shortest path to the destination using the saved waypoints. To prevent wall-through effects, only the next waypoint in the path is activated as the user moves. Technical Details

Place note SDK: Provides AR mapping and cloud storage. A-star algorithm: Finds the shortest path between nodes. Waypoint controller: Activates the next waypoint as the user walks. Future Development

Android support: Investigating options for implementing a similar solution on Android devices. Localization feedback: Adding visual or auditory cues to notify users when they are successfully localized. This indoor navigation solution combines the strengths of AR, pathfinding, and cloud storage to provide users with reliable and convenient guidance in indoor environments.
