Unlocking the Potential of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean

In the heart of the Mediterranean, a region teeming with unparalleled biodiversity, lies a pressing need to protect its fragile ecosystems. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have emerged as beacons of hope, offering a delicate balance between conservation and sustainable economic development.

However, the Mediterranean currently faces a stark reality: only four percent of its vast expanse is protected, leaving a mere 0.4 percent of its coastal waters under the shelter of MPAs. The need for more and more effective MPAs is undeniable.

To address this challenge, a collaborative effort is underway, spearheaded by WWF’s MedPAN South project. Joining forces with over 20 partner organizations, the project is empowering 11 countries across the southern and eastern Mediterranean to embark on the journey of establishing and nurturing MPAs.

Creating and developing an effective MPA is a multifaceted and time-consuming endeavor, encompassing three distinct phases. The initial phase involves meticulous planning, incorporating scientific, social, and legal considerations. The pioneering phase marks the operationalization of the MPA, while the self-sufficiency phase prioritizes financial sustainability.

To ensure the success of MPAs, the active engagement of all stakeholders is paramount. The MedPAN South project places local and national consultations at the core of its planning process, fostering the participation of administrators, fishermen, divers, and local businesses. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, laying the foundation for long-term MPA effectiveness.
