Scalp Psoriasis: Treatment Options and Relief

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that can affect different parts of the body, including the scalp. When it affects the scalp, it can cause scaling and dandruff-like symptoms that can be severe and difficult to treat, leading to social embarrassment.

To address scalp psoriasis, it’s recommended to use a lotion containing tar, salicylic acid, sulfur, and sometimes a mild steroid. This lotion should be applied to the scalp overnight and washed off the next morning with a gentle shampoo. Leave-on lotions with calamine or zinc oxide can also help soothe the scalp. In severe cases, doctors may suggest home-based narrowband UV phototherapy or oral medications. For psoriasis extending to the face or neck, oral treatments may be prescribed to reduce the scaling and disfigurement associated with the condition. Stress management techniques can also be beneficial in controlling psoriasis.
