  • Voices for Accessible Transit: MTA Public Meeting

    2024-04-28

The public hearing for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s September board meeting commenced with a series of passionate testimonies from concerned citizens. Among the speakers was an individual who had recently undergone knee surgery, vividly recalling the treacherous stairs where Malaysia Goodson met her untimely demise. The speaker emphasized that despite the tragic incident and subsequent lawsuits, the accessibility challenges on MTA platforms persist. Another speaker, a former engineering student from City College of New York, shared their firsthand experiences navigating the subway system with a disability, highlighting the arduous and time-consuming commutes they faced. They underscored the ongoing accessibility issues, despite promises made over the past 15 years to address these concerns. A resident of Rochdale Village expressed their frustration over the lack of a ramp and ADA compliance in their community, impacting the lives of numerous senior residents. Other speakers raised concerns about elevator outages, which significantly disrupted their daily routines. A woman who experiences seizures on public transportation shared her worries about the potential dangers posed by malfunctioning elevators, emphasizing the importance of reliable accessibility options for all. The testimonies also included criticism of the MTA’s handling of fare and toll increases, with speakers arguing against these proposals without addressing accessibility improvements as a priority. Heartfelt appeals were made by the cousin of Malaysia Goodson, who spoke about the devastating loss of her family member due to the lack of accessibility on subway stairs. The speaker urged the MTA to prioritize accessibility upgrades to prevent further tragedies. The testimonies echoed a common theme: the persistent challenges faced by individuals with disabilities on the MTA system and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to ensure equal access for all.

  • Unlock the Hidden Productivity of Your Smartphone

    2024-04-20

Unlock the hidden productivity potential of your smartphone and transform it from a time-sapping device into your perfect productivity companion. By applying the KonMari method, declutter your phone by removing apps that no longer spark joy. Eliminate distractions by disabling notifications and visual triggers, such as badges and haptic feedback. This will give you back control over your phone usage and prevent you from falling into the trap of constant attention-seeking. Organize your apps using the structure of homescreen pages. Hide social media apps in folders and keep productivity apps on your main page. This will help you focus on tasks that truly matter. Divide your day into time chunks using alarms and create a tiered system for categorizing apps based on usage. Keep the less important apps on the last homescreen page for maximum effectiveness. Streamline your organization apps and focus on using a few key ones for daily tasks. Consider using Google Calendar or iCalendar for event planning, Notion for organization templates and projects, and Todoist for to-do lists. Android users can leverage widgets to add visual productivity elements to their phone’s dashboard, such as to-do lists and calendar blocks. Use your phone’s background as a productivity booster by creating a new one each week with a thought-provoking question or sentence. This will serve as a constant reminder of your weekly intention. Rather than relying on blocking apps, cultivate a mindful relationship with technology. Understand the impact of over-sharing personal information and strive for a balanced approach to phone usage. Explore the CuriosityStream documentary “Curious Minds: the Internet” for insights into the impact of technology on innovation and decision-making. • Embracing the Imperfect: A Working Mother's Journey

    2024-04-12

In a poignant and thought-provoking video, a working mother candidly explores the challenges and internal conflicts faced by many in her position. Sharing a personal anecdote about the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s experience with her son’s school, she highlights the societal tendency to prioritize men’s work over women’s. Reflecting on her own journey as a working mother, the speaker confesses to initially attempting to balance her career and parenting roles as though they were separate entities. However, she has come to realize the impossibility of fully committing to both spheres simultaneously. The constant juggling act has led to feelings of guilt and inadequacy, prompting her to question the type of mother she truly wants to be. While she desires to be present for every milestone in her children’s lives, she also recognizes the importance of pursuing her career aspirations. The speaker emphasizes the need for open and honest conversations about the emotional toll that working parenthood takes. She challenges women to embrace their humanity and acknowledge that they cannot be perfect at all times. Drawing inspiration from the concept of “spinning plates,” she suggests identifying which aspects of work and home life are truly essential and letting go of the rest. This may involve declining non-essential work invitations or accepting that certain tasks at home may not always be done to perfection. The speaker acknowledges that working parents will inevitably face compromises and sacrifices, but emphasizes the importance of self-compassion and understanding. She believes that by releasing the pressure to be everything to everyone, working parents can truly embrace and enjoy the precious time they have with their children. Ultimately, the video serves as a call for a more realistic and supportive approach to working parenthood. By recognizing the challenges and addressing them openly, we can create a society where women can thrive both as professionals and as mothers.

  • Don't Be a Photo Sniper: The Secret to Exceptional Travel Photography

    2024-04-07

Hey there, Mitchell from Mitchell K. Photos here. Today, I’m sharing a fundamental travel photography tip that’s crucial for capturing exceptional images. It’s a simple concept but often overlooked, and it’s all about avoiding being a “photo sniper.” By “photo sniper,” I mean limiting yourself to a few shots and hoping to get the perfect image in a single attempt. Instead, I advocate for a more comprehensive approach that involves taking multiple frames with purpose and intent. This strategy significantly increases your chances of capturing that special shot. Let’s explore some examples from my recent travels. For this image of a carpenter, I initially tried photographing him in front of his work, but the composition felt cluttered. So, I moved him into the fog, which simplified the background and drew focus to his character. I didn’t stop after a few frames; I kept shooting, waiting for the right expression and adjusting my perspective. Another example involves capturing a horse and boy in a mountain landscape. The boy left, and rain started pouring, prompting me to seek shelter in my car. But then I noticed the potential of rain-streaked windows creating an intriguing foreground. I experimented with different aperture settings to control the focus on the raindrops. Finally, for this drone shot, I knew light and shadow would play a crucial role. I explored various angles and perspectives to showcase the interplay of mountains and sunlight. I didn’t just shoot haphazardly; I had a clear purpose and intent with each frame, seeking out the most captivating composition and lighting conditions. Throughout my photographic journey, I’ve realized that the key is not simply to shoot more but to shoot with purpose. Don’t obsess over getting the shot in the fewest attempts; instead, embrace the process of capturing as many nuances and variations as possible. Remember, you may never return to a place or have the same opportunity again. So, don’t be a photo sniper. Take the time to explore, experiment, and shoot with a purpose. You’ll be amazed at how significantly it improves the quality of your travel photographs.
